There's a movement to ban divorce and put the proposition onto the California ballot.  I heartedly support their efforts and think the Act is the logical result of arguments used against same-sex marriage.

Secretary of State Bowen (who's opponent has said some interesting things about African-Americans lately) has approved the signature-collecting process.

Excited to see how this plays out!

This is just a stunt meant to embarrass conservatives and highlight their hypocrisy on the so-called "sanctity of marriage."  The issue is sure to fail and I doubt it will have the desired effect.

Without some legal exit, who would be foolish enough to get married in the first instance?  Just asking.

Agreed.  I doubt it'll even get on the ballot.

You might be surprised.  It's getting a weird coalition of right-wing and gay-rights groups.  Obviously it's doomed to fail, but the stunt only involves getting it on the ballot so "the gays can vote on YOUR rights"

There are right-wingers actually supporting this? Perhaps it will succeed in making them look like lunatics, though that's not too hard in California.

How does supporting this make someone a lunatic?

It only does if one is serious about it, as I imagine the right-wing groups are. Obviously it is different if you support it to make a point, as I imagine the gay rights groups do.

Well it also has its appeal if your goal is to eliminate civil marriage, but I doubt these right-wing groups support it for that reason.

It still has to qualify for the ballot. Of course it'll be voted down if it qualifies.

Unlike same-sex marriage, divorce is a genuine threat to the sanctity of marriage. Hopefully it will pass, though I doubt it.

It depends on whether or not the gay rights groups try and get 70,000ish of the 75,000 signatures they'll need I suppose.  I'm not sure if people are willing to stand on street corners in the rain in Castro & other places to collect signatures for a joke.  But if they don't hold hands and give away their sexuality, they could probably collect a fair number of signatures from outside Catholic churches and community centers.

We'll see.  It seems to be professionally run from the news stories I've seen about it and the website itself.

I support this of course. The sanctity of marriage must be protected.
