A tax on banks’ financial transactions which would be used specifically to help poor people cope with the economic crisis is overwhelmingly supported by the British public, according to an opinion poll carried out by YouGov for Oxfam.

Oxfam is campaigning for a financial transaction tax on banks to raise money to help poor people affected by the economic crisis and cope with climate change. The economic crisis is forcing about 50 million more people into extreme poverty - that is 100 people every minute struggling to live off less than 75p-a-day. The economic downturn is also putting severe pressure on education and health spending in Africa and across the world.

According to the YouGov poll, almost twice as many people would support (53%) than oppose (28%) a financial transaction tax (often referred to as a Tobin tax) on the basis that some of the money raised would be used to help people hit by the economic crisis in the UK and abroad.

How is this different from a sales tax? Some estimates say that even an insanely low tax rate would bring in billions.

At the moment 53% of Brits would probably vote to take every penny off bankers, sell their homes and harvest their organs. It won't make a blind bit of difference as the money raised would have to pay off government debt Roll Eyes

You know, that actually sounds like a good idea. It isn't as though there's much justification in private individuals owning pipe organs anyway.

Why can't we just have a land value tax?
