I didn't know you felt so passionately about Danny Davis.

I was looking forward to his retirement.

There was a lot of pressure from black leaders for Davis to withdraw. There were five candidates filed for Cook County Board president and four were black including the extremely unpopular incumbent Todd Stroger. There was quite a bit of concern that the split among black candidates would hand the primary to the white candidate Terry O'Brien.

Davis kept his options open by filing for both offices, and Monday was the deadline to decide on one office.  Once he withdrew to run for reelection, that set off a domino effect as three other current office holders withdrew from the congressional race. There were other downballot dominoes as well, as often happens on the deadline for withdrawals.

Davis' quote yesterday:

"I always said that if there were four candidates coming from the same political base, that it mitigated against one of those individuals being successful."

Translated out of politicalspeak into plain English.

"I was going to lose--I knew I was going to lose, therefore I decided to run for reelection to my safe Congressional seat."

Just like in the cases of Luis Guiterrez and Jesse Jackson Jr, the congressmen served their districts well and the time wasn't the right to move up in local or federal offices.

It seems as if Dorthy Brown and Todd Stroger are going after each other for the same type of voters, and going to split.  I like Ald Preckwrinkle or Obrien to win the nomination.
