I read an article about Flaherty in the Boston Globe; what kind of shot does he have?

Wasn't Michael Flaherty the character that Michael J. Fox played on Spin City?

I consider it to be unthinkable that Menino will lose, but Flaherty has a decent enough shot to wind up in second place and make the runoff.

the race for second should be interesting between flaherty and yoon.

this is obviously a yoon's warm-up run for 2013.

I feel like it's hard to take Yoon too seriously, but I am willing to be surprised come Election Day.

Maybe it's just the fact that he's running for mayor of Boston and he's Asian.

For anyone who cares, Menino and Flaherty are the ones who advance to the general.

Menino narrowly won a majority of the vote in the final tally:

Menino 41026 50.52%
Flaherty 19459 23.96%
Yoon 17179 21.16%
McCrea 3340 4.11%

I bet both are Democrats. That's the way the Twin Cities' mayoral elections are, officially non-partisan but no Republicans seriously run. The Republicans just end up voting for the more conservative Democrat (like Randy Kelley and that guy who ran against Rybak who I can't remember.)

Menino looks like a shoo-in now.

Does anybody run on the Republican line?  Republicans in New York get a candidate...and sometimes he wins! Cheesy

No, it's a non-partisan race.

The last Republican to win a race of any kind in Boston was Althea Garrison in 1992, which is just flat out my favorite MA political story of all time.

Her opponent failed to return her signatures properly and was kicked from the ballot.  The district was too apathetic to figure out the write-in campaign.  And so, in arguably one of the most minority heavy districts in Boston, a Republican won an upset, narrow victory over no one.

But the best part, well... here's your el-oh-el moment:

Reminds me of The Wire (the TV show in my sig), where one story arc follows the mayoral race in Baltimore.  The Democratic primary was treated as "Election Day", while the actual election day was a mere formality.

It's not quite like that. That sounds like there is a partisan election, just that whoever wins the Democratic primary wins by default in the general, so the primary is more important. This is a non-partisan election where the top two go on to the general, and they may belong to the same party (and most likely will.) That's how St. Paul does it and Minneapolis did before this year (when we switched to IRV.)

Really a much better system in one-party cities.

followed up by a 54.9-45.1 loss in 1994. I'd have to check on Sunday to see which areas stayed with her. But a check of precinct results compared to one account of the minority population in the area suggests that African-Americans voted for Garrison in 1992.

Which should tell you how craptacular Irene Roman's campaign was.

Garrison lost 58/42 in a Dem primary in 1998 too

She ran as an Independent for State Senate in 2008 in Suffolk-1, too.
