I'll take it.  Anyone that can raise money fast and put the Democrats on the offense here would be nice.

He'll by 69 on election day; I'd rather find someone younger.

He's seat wouldn't be safe if open. Just saying.

Just so you know this shack of sh**t is my Congressmen. The only democratic area in this District is a portion of Wake and maybe Wilson county(narrowly though). Johnston County(My home) is completely in this district and went to McCain by 61-37 and Went to Bush by an even bigger margin. There are also portions of Harnett, Warren, and Nash counties if I am correct. Fmr State Senator Fred Smith(R) of Clayton would be an excellent candidate for this district, if he would run, in my opinion. The district went narrowly too Obama but in 2010 if you have lower turnout among younger voters and Dems in general, even a slight shift away from the Dems nationally would make this a Republican seat if it were open. It would definately give us an exciting house race for once either way.

Etheridge is almost 70.  I dont think any other Freshman Senator has been that old at their initial election.

What does it matter? He'd get defeated in 2016 anyway.

But we shouldn't be thinking like that.  We should assume our guy can hold the seat for 20 years.

It matters because he probably wont win in 2010, which is likely to be a bad Dem year.  He would also cost Democrats another House seat.

I don't know about that.  You're right that the House seat could be picked up.  That district leans slightly Republican, but Etheridge would be the strongest challenger to Burr of all the Democrats in the running.  Burr's approvals are not very good.

I think Burr being a Republican in 2010 will probably be enough for him to win in North Carolina.

Etheridge would lose, why not run someone who could win.
