To what extent is there a common identity of Afghan-ness relative to say more specific ethnic identities? I know that Afghanistan as a polity has existed for a while, no?

There is also notable religious diversity as well. I always thought that many of the rural regions centered around tribal loyalties rather than taking orders from Kabul, hence so many of the issues we see today in establishing a functioning democracy in the country....
