I'm surprised that you didn't mention the "third party" of your own state: The Independence Party of Minnesota (at least after Jesse Ventura). Pretty much the perfect example of an utterly pointless "moderate hero" party.

As for other cases (talking right now, and not historically speaking), the Norwegian Labour party - at least its if you only consider its leadership - seems like a pretty good candidate.

The Liberal Democrats (and most other "centrist"/politically vage liberal parties as well) could also be a candidate.
