William Woods Holden of North Carolina was the first US governor to be removed from office, in 1870. It appears the impeachment was motivated moreso by unreconstructed Democrats with sour grapes who seized an opportunity to remove the Republican governor from office, than by graft or fraud.


And they say today's climate is more polarized and partisan.
