Ferry, WA, in 1988 (972 votes each for Dukakis and Bush).

I've noticed that before. How on earth did Dukakis do so well there? Farm crisis?

I still don't totally understand why Dukakis did so well in northeastern Washington, or why it's swung so GOP.  Sure it's working-class but...

Mondale cleaned up in Western, PA and now half the counties go Republican with most of the rest as toss-ups in a close race in the state.  Lots of factors can change the party a place votes for.
