Senator fhtagn got to this first (great minds think alike
), but I would implore the Senate to no longer move forward with this amendment. The Senator is correct that outside intervention has rendered the original intent here moot. More broadly, this got mired in back-and-forths over multiple individuals and past misdeeds that I see as unhelpful for solving what we
presently face. Banning by constitutional means should be an exceptional, last resort measure when other options for accountability are exhausted or otherwise out of reach. Given that there are or already have been appropriate responses on the others named during debate, this has run its course.
Reconciliation will take time, but moving on here will be an important step forward. I commend everyone in the Senate for working through this sensitive issue over the weeks and speaking out for what's right.
