Quote
Schumer said in prepared remarks that new elections are the "only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about the future of Israel."

Schumer criticized Netanyahu for aligning himself with far-right extremists in the Israeli government, saying he has turned away from a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. Biden supports such a plan.

"Nobody expects Prime Minister Netanyahu to do the things that must be done to break the cycle of violence, preserve Israel's credibility on the world stage, and work toward a two-state solution," Schumer said.

Aid and comfort came from our confused President:

Amazing as it was, Mitch McConnell was the voice of reason:

So let me get this straight:  The people who whine endlessly about "Our Democracy!" and "Foreign Election Interference!" are interfering in the working democracy of an ally.  Somehow, this doesn't compute.  Lots of people don't like Netanyahu in America, including lots of politicians, but does this justify a call for new elections in Israel?  Don't the Israelis have the right to choose their own leaders without Editorial Comment from American Pols?

If we were talking about President Zelenskyy in Ukraine, the pol who called for new Ukrainian elections would be pilloried as a Putin Stooge, a "threat to democracy", an "authoritarian", and he would be roundly criticized for meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs, and rightly so.  So what's the guiding principle here with the Israeli situation?  It can't be "democracy".  It can't be "freedom".  There is no reason to think anything other than Biden is interfering (and it's Biden that will be doing the interfering; he's signed off on Schumer's comments) in the internal affairs of a democracy and an ally in order to shore up defections from younger voters, Islamic voters (especially in MI), and the hard left.  Shame on him.  If you're going to whine about "Our Democracy", your comments may gain a bit of credibility if you refrain from the kind of outside interference in some other nation's "democracy", regardless of your personal opinions.

This is interference in another country's elections, something that all but DavidB have excoriated here.

I have come to the conclusion that everyone here (save DavidB) is fine with foreign interference in American elections as long as it helps Biden win.

It's not "interference," it's expressing an opinion.

When I post on Atlas, that's expressing an opinion.

When the Senate Majority Leader of the United States makes a statement of this nature, and the President publicly agrees with him, that's more than "expressing an opinion".  That's sending a message demanding a nation comply with a demand, with the implied threat of withdrawn support.  Israel isn't China; it's a democracy, it has a right to exist, it has the right to defend itself, and it has the right to hold elections according to its own laws.

All of these Republican Gentiles lining up to condemn a Jewish Senator’s criticism of Israeli’s current government = not a good look!

It's the principle of us not interfering with someone else's democracy.

And we have a right to place conditions on the money that we send to other countries.

Don't like that? Fine, vote for someone else.

But to call this "interreference in Israeli elections" is just comical.

That's a matter for behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Schumer's statement is a way of strong-arming Israel to, essentially, dump it's elected President, essentially at the behest of the Far Left and Palestinian voters in MI that could swing the election by voting 3rd party or not showing up.  Indeed, the motive for this ham-handedness is all American Domestic Politics, which makes it even more irresponsible.

Netanyahu's reply is also racist. He's basically like "we're Israel not some Banana Republic".

ROFL.

Israel isn't a "Banana Republic" in that it's not some unstable government on the order of many in Latin America, which range from unstable democracies unable to fully establish the rule of law to authoritarian dictatorships (often military dictatorships).  Israel is a FUNCTIONING democracy who has elected a leader many in America don't like, but I missed the part where other democracies were required to submit to Regime Change On Demand of the Democratic Party.  (Of course, if Trump demanded Regime Change in Israel for whatever reason, a Democratic House would attempt impeachment for that, alone, so . . .)

In my entire life I have never seen a call for Regime Change in a STABLE DEMOCRACY.  How ridiculous is this?  Just imagine if we a GOP Senator made it a condition of Aid to Ukraine that they have new elections where Zelenskyy isn't the candidate.  We've already gone down that route with an elected Ukrainian President, and look where we're at now.  This is breaking new ground, and not in a good way.

Is anybody surprised that fuzzy is parroting Kremlin propaganda when he talks about the Euromaidan?
Not me.

Whatever one thinks about Victor Yanukovych, he was a democratically elected leader.

A good part of this is water over the dam now.  Russia has certainly forfeited its talking points with its current aggression.  But the United States interfered in the internal affairs of Ukraine in this matter.  Even the MSM in America wrote how Obama would have to justify his role as to why he allowed America to help undo a duly elected democratic leader.

If America wishes to re-evaluate its policy toward Israel going forward, that is one thing.  That can be done through diplomatic talks, appropriate backchannels, etc. But Israel is an ally and a democracy.  This irresponsible course of action by Schumer, which was pretty much signed off on by Biden, is off the rails.

I don't think this is a way of pandering to pro-Palestinian people. Netanyahu is just bad to work with. He's a bad leader and he's making things worse, which means all our aid to Israel is for nothing. I've said before, if I were president then Israel gets no free money with Netanyahu in charge. I don't know if that's more or less inappropriate than calling for a new election.

Charles deGaulle was bad to work with in the 1960s.  He took a trip to Canada in 1967 and actively joined with Quebec separatists in saying "Long Live Free Quebec!" publicly.  He kicked NATO out of Paris; he's the reason it's now in Brussels.

I don't recall LBJ (whom deGaulle hated) or Nixon demanding new elections in France.  But nowadays, the only democratically elected leaders that are respected for the sake of "democracy" are the ones that are the faves of the Globalist Left.  Just imagine the reaction to a call for new elections in Brazil in response to their increasing embrace of China.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime step taken solely for the domestic political concerns of the Democratic Party.  It is irresponsible, and it is certainly not in the interest of "democracy".

Again, this is a guy who supports the January 6th insurrection.

There was no insurrection.  There was a riot, and I don't condone that.

If there actually WAS an insurrection on January 6th, with no firearms, what words should we use to describe BLM and Antifa's armed takeovers of police precincts in Minneapolis and NYC?  What do we call the violent rioting at the Federal Courthouse in Portland.

You'll not answer this honestly because you're the Crown Prince of Drive-By Atlas.  But you're full of beans here.  And you supported the violence in America's streets in 2020.  If I got that wrong, you can condemn BLM and Antifa in your reply.

This is a false equivalency.

Keep telling yourself that.

Nuland handing out freaking donuts to protestors didn’t bring down Yanukovych. It’s actually amazing how liberals have been chastised for decades for insufficient loyalty to the country yet we are now at a place were old boomers like Fuzzy repeat Kremlin propaganda

Back in 2014, the liberal American news media were writing stories about this, suggesting that Obama was going to need to explain to the world why America would help grease the skids for a democratically elected government in a country functioning as a democracy.  This isn't "Kremlin Propaganda"; it was a legitimate point in 2014 and it's a legitimate point now, at least in terms of how we should conduct ourselves in general.

And we're not at war with Russia.  Now I'm OK with the aid we've sent to date.  But people like you are the worst ambassadors for more aid because of your hackishness.  I grant you that this is who you are, but people like you who are the ones who are elected to Congress or who are mouthpieces for Biden make me suspicious about the lack of candor and transparency about where our money is going in Ukraine.  And I'm curious why we must have a Cease Fire in Gaza but not a negotiated peace in Ukraine.  Won't Hamas keep going until they can wipe out Israel?  Why would anyone believe that they would keep an armistice any better than Putin?
