It's not looking good for Biden in 2024, but he's likely to run anyway.

What would happen if, say, Roy Cooper (who goes out of office in 2025) looks with horror at the 2024 election and opts to challenge Biden as unelectable and Harris as an unelectable alternative?

Could such an effort gain traction?  What appeals would be made?  Obviously, the prevention of a Mondale-eque debacle would be one appeal, but what would Cooper have to say to get Democrats to reject Biden, should he be stubborn and run?

Biden or Harris at the top of the Democratic ticket are the worst possibilities, each for a different reason.  Could a guy like Cooper make an appeal to get Biden to step aside?  How successful would t be?
