What kind of "Independent" candidate would Romney have run as?

Would he have been "Moderate Mitt"?  He'd have picked Susan Collins, or maybe Olympia Snowe, if that were his strategy.

Would he have been "The REAL Republican"?  In that case, he'd probably have picked someone like Lindsey Graham.

Would he have been "The TRUE Convervative"?  He'd probably have tried to get Lyin' Ted Cruz, but Cruz probably would have resisted.

Each role would call for a different sort of running mate, and I'm not sure what niche Romney would have selected.  The only thing I know is what Rep. Louie Gohmert said of Mitt in 2012:  "Whether you're liberal, moderate, or conservative, he's been on your side at one time or another!".

Depends how he wants to expand his coalition.

If he wants to go establishment, perhaps Kasich or Brian Sandoval.

If he wants to pull in #NeverTrump conservatives, perhaps someone like Rand Paul or Scott Walker.

Rand Paul had to pledge his support to the winner of the primary.

Maybe he could have had Bill Weld. I know he absolutely hates Trump, and that would have pulled a certain number of Libertarians.

Romney's a bit too much of a neocon for Rand Paul's taste (though not as bad as McCain).
