If Romney were to do this, it would signal his intent to leave politics for good.  Unless a major political figure, and especially a sitting elected official or a person identified as a potential Presidential candidate, plans to switch parties, endorsing their party’s national ticket is a MUST.  If you don’t like your party’s Presidential nominee and you don’t want to switch parties and you want a future in your own party, the thing to do is to publicly endorse your party’s nominee, then do little or nothing to help them get elected.  But don’t refuse to endorse the nominee, and ESPECIALLY don’t endorse the candidate of the other party.  Lots of prominent Democrats became Democrats for Nixon in 1972, but most of them had to become Republicans to continue in politics.
