Why was this county so strongly Republican in the 30's, 40's and 50's? Minnesota's core GOP belt has always been in the southeastern part of the state, yet this west central county surrounded by strongly Democratic counties consistently voted Republican - it was Landon's best county in the state in '36 (he carried only three counties), and in 1964 it voted for Goldwater. It's obviously a heavily Lutheran county, but why was this one so strongly Republican?
