I'm more curious about this election outcome than any I've followed. Does the government expend the gains from its democratic reforms (and prevent Kyi from leading the country) or does it use the Roadmap to democracy and allow her to lead parliament, albeit with a puppet president? Time will tell, BUT THE WORLD IS WATCHING! Wink

So the House of Reps has 440 seats. NLD needs 221 for a majority. 110 seats are appointed by the military though. That leaves 330 seats up for grabs. Math is hard but I think that means in order to win a simple majority, NLD has to win a 2/3rds majority of available seats.

With about 47% of seats declared, the National League for Democracy (NLD) has taken over 90% of the vote. It's a landslide! Let's hope the will of the people is truly honored this time.

Myanmar President Thein Sein and the powerful army congratulated democratic champion Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday, after her party trounced the ruling camp in the first free election in 25 years and was closing in on an absolute majority in parliament.

Thein Sein reiterated that the government would accept the results of the election and agreed to Suu Kyi's request to hold reconciliation talks soon, although the two are still to agree on the time and location of the negotiations.

Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) has won over 80 percent of the seats declared so far in the lower house and is well ahead in the upper house and regional assemblies.

Results so far gave Suu Kyi's party 179 of 216 seats declared out of the 330 seats not allocated to the military in the lower house. Under the junta-crafted constitution, a quarter of the seats in both chambers are unelected and reserved for the armed forces.

To form Myanmar's first democratically elected government since the early 1960s, the NLD needs to win more than two-thirds of seats that were contested in parliament.

The NLD has said it is on course for over 250 seats in the lower house, well above the 221 needed to control the chamber. Reuters was not able to independently verify the party's estimates of its own performance.

CNN BREAKING NEWS ALERT - Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) wins a historic majority in Myanmar's parliament.

I hope the NLD is able to stay dominate for the foreseeable future.
