What about Reagan in 1980 ? He lost in 1968 to Nixon, and then in 1976 to Ford. He was 69 years old when he ran for the third time in 1980. His victory was not pre ordained, if things such as the hostage crisis went the other way.

If he had lost in 1980 he could be seen as a 3rd time loser who ran well past his prime.
