John Lindsay Campaign GOTV - Florida

With the help of many of Florida's great mayors, John Lindsay has built up a strong infrastructure in the state of Florida. A win here is crucial to Lindsay's campaign, and will be a defining moment for the current frontrunner. As a result, the following will be the focus of this GOTV movement:

- Targeting blacks and hispanics, aiming at getting record turnout by promoting Lindsay's record on civil rights and support for busing.
- Targeting senior citizens by promoting his record on half-fare transportation.
- Targeting Democratic Moderates and Conservatives by talking up non-Vietnam and non-Civil Rights issues (including expanding education and health services)

With the field so crowded with anti-war messages, Lindsay campaign volunteers are instead promoting Lindsay's stances on non-Vietnam issues and his management background. Within the state of Florida, Lindsay, thanks to the Mayors of Florida that have endorsed him from Tampa, Orlando, and Miami, will have an overall urban strategy, in hopes to gain the support of the trifecta of Democrats - Moderate, Conservative, and Liberal.

John Lindsay 72 - March 15th - 21st, 1972

"The country is listening to our message. In Illinois, we can make our voices heard even louder - We need a fighter! The proud fight for the middle class in this country is ignored by Washington, but that will change when we truly send a President of America to the capital. I will fight for school children, white and black, the eldery, the middle class, veterans, and everyone who has been left voiceless by this Nixon administration."

"I have opponents in this race who are content on attacking others rather than standing on their own record. The fact is, in the Senate there is a lot of talk, but little action. I've been in the second toughest job for the last six years fighting for the solutions to the problems regular people face, rather than just talking about them on the Senate floor. I'm the only one who can get things done for regular people."

"As President Nixon's polices have caused mass inflation, American workers dollars mean less and less. The Minimum wage has stayed the same since the late 60s and the results are showing. It's time we raised the minimum wage and keep it floating based on the needs of people. I propose a big hike - to $2.30/Hr. And we can't rely on Congress to keep up with this issue regularly, so I propose that if the Government continues to put forward policies that demote the value of a family's earning power, we make their earning power on similar ground to it was before. I'm proposing tying the minimum wage to inflation, so that wages remain stable."

"Voters in Illinois have seen the effects of a Nixon Presidency. They've seen our men and women continue to shed blood in Vietnam, they continue to see missions abroad at the expense of fewer hospitals, less money for schools, and more crime on our streets. As President, I will fight to make sure that our priorities are straight. I'm the only candidate who send Nixon out of Washington, and put common sense back in our capital."

John Lindsay GOTV Operation in Illinois

In Illinois, John Lindsay's strategy of directly aiming at Cook County and Northern Illinois at the expense of downstate has worked to the extent that he has inherited the Chicago Machine that is so hated downstate. Lindsay won the endorsement of Mayor Richard Daley, who, despite some claiming his power has weakened, is still a massive powerbroker in his home city. Lindsay also is employing the minority strategy - taking advantage of strongly democratic minorities that are now voting in much higher quantities.

- The campaign will be targeting blacks and hispanics in Chicago, pushing Lindsay's strong support for forced busing
- The campaign will be targeting blue collar workers in Northern Illinois, pushing Lindsay's populist stances on workers rights and the minimum wage
- The campaign will be targeting seniors throughout Illinois, pushing Lindsay's record of half-fare transportation for seniors and support for hiking benefits for seniors.
- The campaign will be targeting upper class suburban whites, pushing Lindsay's record of fighting crime.
- The campaign will be targeting Muskie Supporters, noting Lindsay as the only candidate who can beat President Richard Nixon.
- The campaign will be targeting current supporters of the anti-war cluster, noting Lindsay's push to end the War in Vietnam and his more consistent fervor against the war.

The key will be the triangle of the support of blue collar workers, suburban whites, and blacks and hispanics, and another key will be a massive splash in the Chicago area and strong support in the Northern Illinois. The Lindsay Campaign will be using a large chunk of its funds to get an impressive showing clearly in first place in this state, as well as volunteers knocking on doors and getting voters who have never voted before to register (mostly on the minority side of things).

Someone who will end the war in Vietnam? Someone who can beat President Nixon and restore hope in our future? How about John Lindsay, the man who has spent 6 years as Mayor of New York City accomplishing some of the things that the United States as a whole still needs to get done. Mayor Lindsay Campaign Statement on Edmund Muskie's Ad

"Senator Muskie brought up something that was on public record - that Mayor Lindsay was a former Republican. That much is true. But even as a Republican, Lindsay has done more to help working families, veterans, seniors, and minorities than Senator Muskie, who has spent that time in Washington defending the wars and the powers behind them. Washington uses divide and conquer tactics to get their message across, and Muskie has learned them well. Mayor Lindsay won't divide America, he will bring America together, to bring back American priorities to Washington, instead of forcing Washington priorities down the throats of ordinary Americans. This is obviously the desperate attack from a desperate candidate who is sinking in the polls because they found out who he isn't for them anymore. Brokered Convention Talk - Could another candidate break through the middle? (Leak from Smathers staffers)

May 8th - Beyond the continuing collapse of the Edmund Muskie Campaign, few conclusions were drawn from the recent bunch of primaries that occurred last week. Mayor Sam Yorty and Governor George Wallace battle for blue collar whites, George McGovern, Mo Udall, and Fred Harris battle for anti-Vietnam voters, and the establishment is strained for choices among this bunch. Democratic powerbrokers fear any potential nominee would be electoral poison. And there doesn't seem to be much concensus - Yorty leads in delegates, but has only secured about a third of them - not nearly the kind of numbers he would need to consolidate the nomination. A brokered convention for the Democrats seems almost assured.

The question comes - who rises, who falls, in the count afterwards. Democratic powerbrokers are looking for a compromise candidate, and looking for it fast. Some donors are claiming today that they may have already found him (or maybe he found them) - Former Senator George Smathers. Smathers was a favorite son for Hubert Humphrey in Florida in 1968, and is known as a good friend of Former President John F. Kennedy. Smathers is a southern democrat, but voted with the rest of the Democrats on Civil Rights. Smathers is an intraparty moderate who doesn't have the current baggage that Muskie has.

Smathers quietly backed Muskie, at least until Muskie's campaign began losing steam. As early as late March, Smathers has been talking up donors, powerbrokers, Democratic party leaders about a potential run, but those talks began as just speculation. As McGovern, Yorty, and Harris have begun gaining steam, Smathers concern for the party became the need for him to run. However, their rise began too late for him to get up full resources to run - instead, Smathers now intends to throw his name into the ring upon a potential brokered convention as a consensus candidate.

Highlights of George Smathers Media Appearance

"The President's tenure has been a disaster for the American family in every way imaginable. We are not safer than we were four years ago, we are not more prosperous than we were four years ago, and it is because of this President's tenure we are in this place. And I worry that our party's nominee, no matter who is in the delegate lead, will end up deeply damaged thanks to this decisive primary."

"We need to get our men and women out of Vietnam as soon as we can. Not only have we lost lives in Vietnam, but we've damaged our reputation. We need a responsible, sensible plan to get our boys out of Vietnam. We can't rush, we can't risk complete communist domination, but we can't continue to spill blood in the region for what is now lost cause."

"The voters are getting anxious, and I understand their frustrations. President Nixon has played divide and conquer tactics in the last four years that have torn this country apart. We see it in our own Democratic party, where vast wings of the Democratic party which have largely fallen behind someone of the center have stood out. That concerns me. I will stand by our nominee should we get one, but if the convention turns ugly, I will not stand idly by as my party turns into a shooting gallery."

"The concerns of parents and the concerns of desegregation need to be weighed. I recognize that parents support community pride and are against the discipline problems that come with busing. I believe it is a clumsy way of tackling the problem of segregation. I believe the way we solve it is increased scholarships in college education for students of equal qualification, and empowering our local governments to put more money into impoverished local schools so that children get a better education."

"What I don't see some candidates for President talking about is hope. Hope for a better tomorrow. My friend John Kennedy didn't talk about the gloom and doom of America all the time, he talked about the greatness of America, and how we can change the world. How we can make ourselves better. How we can be even better than the generation before us. Leadership like that rather than the leadership of Richard Nixon is going to get us through the times we face."

George Smathers Statement

"After significant thought, I have come to the conclusion that, while our nation needs a Democratic nominee that beat Richard Nixon, I am not that candidate. However, seeing the weakness in the field, I can not abide and stay away from the decision process. Therefore, I believe my delegates, and my say, can move this electorate towards a candidate, and I believe the candidate that should lead our party is Birch Bayh. Senator Bayh stands for working families, those in poverty, those in dire need of good education, and the Soldiers in Vietnam who need a solution, not another Nixon delay. It's time we unite behind a nominee who can bring this nation together, rather than play right into President Nixon's divisive tactics."
