Probably necessary in states with high COVID case numbers such as New Jersey, Alaska, Illinois, Oregon, Hawaii, Washington, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New York.
Illinois' hospitalizations have been on a near-uninterrupted decline for over a month, and about 55% of residents are fully vaccinated ... sorry, but that's really all that should be looked at.
(Not to mention any "statewide" metric that affects every corner of IL should hardly ever be considered a serious proposal ... even the Governor's "Regions" thing isn't tailored enough.)
Even with vaccinations, people can still develop long COVID or become breeding grounds for new and potentially vaccine resistant variants. That is why I think mask mandates should remain in effect until the overall rate of COVID cases in the US drops to around 0.01 per 100,000. JB Pritzker I think is doing the right thing by keeping the mask mandate in place for now for those reason.
