I'm likely to be mistaken, but didn't the Vatican recently (perhaps a year or so ago) announce that this belief was no longer valid?

Yes, because "new research" has led to that conclusion.

(i.e., it is no longer considered acceptable to the public for the Vatican to hold that idea)

It was originally stated that unbaptised babies went to hell, then limbo was invented, and now this.
