alcon i have nothing against charities.  they are far superior to government welfare programs.

but lets not kid ourselves, few people give to charity.

Actually, I recall something like 40% of people regularly give to charity.  I do not remember where I got those statistics, but it is a good amount.  I give about 30% of the money I have to charity.

More than that.  After some research, I came across this survey, the results of which run completely contrary to what WalterMitty is asserting.

Some highlights:

- In 2004, 83% of adults donated money to one or more non-profit organizations.
- The average amount of money donated per person was $1,232 (or about 3% of one's annual income).

how was that figure obtained?  was it a poll?

people lie.  especially when they want to come across as sensitive and caring.

i bet if you took a poll asking people how often they bathe and brush their teeth, 95%+ would most likely say 'daily'.  would you believe that figure too?

So, basically, you're tossing out what respondants to a poll said in favor of your own gut feeling, which is not corroborated by any evidence whatsoever?  I must ask how you expect people to take what you say to be credible, in that case.

I donate 10% of my income to charity.  I have no reason to assume that I'm an anomaly.

Geez, some of you folks are generous. When I enter the workforce, i doubt i'll even put 5% of my earnings to charity, let alone 10-30%.

Well, personally, I just figure that I don't need the money, so I'll give it to someone that does.  Honestly, if I was a millionaire, I'd probably donate 90% of it to charity.  I've never wanted to amass vast sums of money that I'd then not know what to do with.

I don't really care if others want to keep their money, though.  That's their business.

Your working-class hubris is tragic, Dibble.

I have a feeling he's a lot happier than you are.
