Romney's response sucks.

...ok, sorry, bad joke.  Still, it's probably not the best response to things...and it's definitely worth a snicker or two.  That said, Meyer's a Mormon, so I'm not surprised (though I've gathered that there are a substantial number of Mormon sci-fi/fantasy authors).

Yep, there's actually enough Mormon sci-fi/fantasy authors to have multiple conventions of that kind here in Utah. It's one of the best things about my state. Mormon authors just pop out of the woodwork; Orson Scott Card (whose politics I despise), Brandon Sanderson (who literally teaches a sci-fi/fantasy writing class at BYU), Dan Wells, James Dashner (I think, he at least lives in Utah), Tracy Hickman, Stephanie Meyer (sadly), and a few others I can't remember.

The animator Don Bluth is also Mormon, as were many of the guys who did the original Battlestar Galatica (which has a crapload of LDS symbolism in it).

Heck, the second wife of Isaac Asimov was Mormon (and an author herself), which apparently lead to Asimov coming up with a hilarious joke. The joke goes like this:

The Pope calls all his cardinals to a meeting. He says "I've just gotten a telephone call, and I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, Jesus Christ our lord and savior has come back to rule us all."

One of the amazed cardinals asks "But wait your Holiness, if that's the good news, what's the bad news?"

The Pope replies "The call came from Salt Lake City." Cheesy
