As bad as the 30s were surely the 1910s and 1940s were worse. Economic crisis and mass unemployment is preferable to world war and genocide.

EDIT: The genocides in the 30s (with the famine in Ukraine as the worst) tops the genocides related to WW1, but the overall loss of lives is still much higher in the 1910s.
