On a chat site. Teddy has mental issues, but is generally pretty harmless. He ran for the NDP provincially in PEI and has run for city council in Toronto.

Ottawa's most left wing councillor, Diane Holmes is retiring, even though she already declared as a candidate. Sad to see her go, but she was a little to NIMBY for my taste (I held my nose and voted for her when I lived in her ward in 2010). She was facing a lot of credible candidates already.  She has endorsed NDPer Catherine McKenney who has just entered the race.

Perhaps Ontario should introduce signature requirements.

There is currently 52 candidates who filled for Toronto mayorship.

Nothing new, Toronto always gets a huge number of candidates for mayor.

Interesting that Toronto has 3 times the population of Ottawa, yet Ottawa has just 2 candidates so far.

Close race in Mississauga:

Steve Mahoney: 27
Bonnie Crombie: 25
Don't know: 48 (probably mostly conservatives who can't decide between two Liberals)

Mahoney leads with Tories & Greens, while Crombie leads with Liberals & NDPers

Hatman: Didn't you say that Ford Nation diehards are immovable?

Yes, do you have evidence to suggest otherwise?

There is a Brampton poll:

39% - Linda Jeffrey (former, just, OLP MPP, resigned to run)
26% - John Sanderson (Councillor)
18% - Susan Fennell (Incumbent, a number of spending controversies around her, also Canada's highest paid mayor I believe, 200K+)
17% - Don't know

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/04/29/poll_finds_brampton_mayor_susan_fennell_a_distant_third.html

I thought Vaughan had the highest paid mayor. Weird how these anti-tax suburbs have the highest paid mayors.

Meanwhile, Ottawa finally got a third mayoral candidate yesterday, Robert Gauthier (fringe candidate who ran for mayor in 1997 and 2010, coming 2nd in 1997)

"[Hudak] lost my vote, I don't know what the  ... I can't vote Liberal, because I don't like what (Kathleen) Wynne's doing, I don't care that she's gay or not, I just don't like the corruption. NDP I'm just not left wing. I am like Tim Hudak but I can't, I won't put a sign up on my lawn, I won't put in any money. I might have to vote Green, I don't know what the f[Inks] I'm going to vote right now, I'm going to vote something."

"But I'm absolutely going to vote, I'm probably going to vote Green because the Green guy didn't say a f[inks]ing word."

On Stintz: "I'd like to f[inks]ing jam her, but you know ..."

Staying classy: "Get a shot right now or I'll f[inks]ing rape her..."

Courting the ethnic vote: "Let me get a, no, no no no no, I want that f[inks]ing dago back there, sorry." "I want, give him two shots, the mother dago, because those two dagos are drinking together ..."

He'd fit in well in Hollywood: "I'd rather lose to Olivia Chow than lose to anyone man, cause you know what ... f[inks]ed so bad, they're going to say beg, no I'm not coming back, once I'm gone I'm gone, I'm gone to California."

Following being convicted on fraud charges, London mayor (and former Liberal MP) Joe Fontana is resigning.

There are 10 people running for mayor so far. I don't recognize any of the names. One of them is a city councillor, Matt Brown.

Yes, Ford has a surprisingly high floor. It may be as low as 20%, but likely higher than that.

Ottawa news... Alex Cullen, former Councillor 2000-2010 for Bay Ward and recent NDP candidate in Ottawa West - Nepean is running again for Council (just registered, read via Facebook)

Cool. He won't win though, unfortunately.

Well, he lost last time - so he will lose again most likely. I don't see what has changed to make him more appealing to residents of Bay Ward. The current councillor (Mark Taylor, a Liberal) seems to be doing a good job. Taylor has promised only to sit for two terms (I hate when they do that), so this will be his last election. Cullen might be able to win it next time, mostly due to the huge vote splitting that happens whenever there is an open seat.

I suspect there won't be many incumbents (if any) losing their seats in Ottawa. There is no "appetite for change" like 4 years ago. In fact, we still only have 2 mayoral candidates registered. One would've expected a handful of fringe candidates by now. This is all pointing toward a record low turnout.

I thought she would stay in the mayorship until her death. I suppose she is over 85, at this point.

She's 93.

Hazel's retirement is pretty exciting for Mississauga. Not that Crombie and Mahoney are really any different from each other, but just the prospect of a new mayor is so strange. I think I'm gonna go with Mahoney myself.

What are the differences?

Luckily, Ford's support comes from the demographics least likely to vote. However, I do anticipate a very high turnout in general.

A good idea not to lecture Hash about French politics Wink

Anyways, as absurd as the idea of Ford New Democrats is, think about who the kinds of people are who voted for both Rob Anders and Naheed Nenshi in Calgary.

The truth is that Ford got votes everywhere outside the old City of Toronto, not just in the 'white' areas.

Smitherman's campaign colour was purple! Wink

Weird map though, very, very weird.

Blowhard Ottawa Sun columnist Susan Sherring will be running for council in Gloucester South-Nepean Ward. I now have someone to actively root against there.

Not the same, but Brad Pye (2008 federal candidate in Dartmouth-Cole Harbour) is running for council in Ottawa in Gloucester-Southgate. He's running against the sitting city councillor, left-Liberal Diane Deans (ex(?) wife of former NDP MP Ian Deans) who is the main opposition on council (from the left), so this was not a wise ward choice for him.

The two school trustees who ran provincially for the NDP here don't appear to be running for re-election, but we'll see. One of them is my trustee, so I hope the only guy running so far is decent.

My councillor unexpectedly dropped out of the race Friday. No one expected it. The only 2 candidates running are no names. Only a couple more weeks to go in the nomination period, so the race is on in Alta Vista Cheesy
