What would the names of Australia's electoral divisions be if they were given (exclusively) geographical names, like in Canada?

Here are some ideas:

Adelaide: Adelaide Centre
Aston: Knox
Ballarat: Ballarat-Moorabool-Hepburn
Banks: Hurstville-Padstow
Barker: Bordertown-Mount Gambier-Riverlands
Barton: Rockdale-Kogarah
Bass: Laurenceston-George Town-Dorset-Flinders
Batman: Darebin
Bendigo: Bendigo-Mount Alexander-Kyneton
Bennelong: Ryde
Berowa: Hornsby-Berowa

Close to my names Smiley

BTW, I was using primarily LGAs for the names, as most divisions have far too many suburbs to be included.

Pearce: Brookton-York-Northam-Gingin-Butler

Too long. Is there a geographical feature that unites the division?

Yes. There are ridings in Canada that are named for a river running through it. (eg Battle River)

Then about the only unifying name would be that of a river (the Avon), unless 'ghastly outer Perth sprawlburbia' counts (and I'm sure it doesn't).

Looking at the electoral map, Perth North works fine.

No. "Perth North" implies it's a more urban division. I know in Atlantic Canada they stretch that a bit (such as your own Halifax West), but Perth is too large for this to be an appropriate name.

"Avon River" works, or perhaps "Avon River-Gingin", since Gingin is a bit removed from the River.

Don't hesitate going with geographic features. This is not an exercise in combining all of the LGAs in a division into a name. Of course, as I add more (when I get time), I may resort to that, as my knowledge of Aussie geography is lacking (but this is my attempt to learn more Smiley )

Yeah; harsh gerrymandering makes this impossible. Don't try.

What's being alluded to here is the fact that in the early days of the forum (like a decade or so ago now) several of us did in fact try. Drove us all completely mad.

It was that thread that got me to join this nutty place Cheesy
