- Trump is the first president to lose reelection after his party only controlled the WH for only 1 term( he also didn't face a primary challenger within his party as well)
Carter?
You beat me to it. It'd be nice if Trump had this distinction, but he doesn't. Off the top of my head, this is true of Cleveland 1.0 and Benjamin Harrison as well.
What Trump is unusual in is managing to lose all elements of a trifecta for his party in just one term. I don't know enough about party Congressional control in the Gilded Age to know if he's unique in this, but he's definitely unique in the modern (post-McKinley/TR-era) presidency.
Polk as well.
