I like Walter Williams and usually I agree with him. Certainly he makes some good points here. But in my opinion the extent to which free trade with low cost countries will adversely affect us has been underestimated.

I can think of very few items which can be manufactured here which could not be manufactured in China or Vietnam at a much lower cost. While the offshore sources do not have the facilities to manufacture everything today, they will have in the future. If you pursue this to its logical conclusion the US will eventually cease to be a manufacturing nation. Is that a good thing? Can we continue to be a superpower without manufacturing? I think the answer to both questions is no.
