You are not going a good sense of an average base voter from reading the NYTimes

The types of people that write for the NY Times tend to believe that all women, gays, blacks, whites, hispanics, etc. feel a strong sense of solidarity with all other members of their specific demographic. It's the kind of delusion that only a liberal columnist could buy into these days.
Imagine thinking that a non-White Latino in Hidalgo County feels more solidarity with an Afro-Latino in the Bronx than with a White person in Laredo.

That Latino person in Hidalgo County probably identifies as White.
