I'm pretty sure Islamic dietary laws specifically do not apply to situations where a person is under duress, so the detainee certainly wouldn't have been "worried" about the spiritual consequences of all this, aside from maybe just really not liking the taste of pork.

No! My point is that he will not be spiritually "harmed" by this because there is nothing wrong with violating halal rules if you are under duress or have no other options.
The border patrol agents are so ignorant of other cultures that they thought forcing him to eat pork was going to "hurt" him as a Muslim when in fact since they were forcing him to do it, it doesn't matter.
