Having a right to free speech means you are not prevented from making that speech by the government. If you want to protest on the National Mall, the government can't discriminate against who gets a permit and they can't beat protestors bloody with billy clubs and shoot them indiscriminately.

It doesn't mean your speech is guaranteed to have no consequences with regards to how individuals and private institutions of society choose to react to your speech.

It is absurd that we have to have this conversation with conservatives all the time...

"Ah hate the gays and the Muslims. And them Mex'kins need to go back where they come from."

"That's a rather boorish, intolerant thing to say. I think I'd rather not invite you to my weekly book club since several of our members are gay or Muslim or Hispanic."

"YOU CAN'T DO THAT! AH HAVE THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH! YOU DIRTY FASCIST SOCIALIST COMMUNIST!!!"

You gotta love the fact that the very same people "outraged" about this are the same people who vehemently oppose ENDA.

Because in right-wing America's bizarre logic...

Private businesses have a right to fire people for being gay.

Private businesses do not have the right to fire people for hating gay people.

Also, I was dining in a local Harris County eatery and saw a very heavyset couple at the table next to mine; the woman was wearing one of Phil Robertson's "HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY" t-shirts.
