Honest - Grover Cleveland, he pissed off Tammany Hall AND the Free Silver crowd for chrissakes!  A man, especially a Democrat, has to be pretty damn honest to pull that off!

I am a fan of Grover the Good, but his sinews as an "honest man" are severely tested by his 1893 secret operation on the Onedia. Cleveland did not even tell his own vice-president that he was going to undergo a dangerous surgery to remove cancer from his mouth. Even the famed Dr. W.W. Kean, a celebrated surgeon who was contracted to help with the operation, commented that such an operation could be dangerous and perhaps lead to Cleveland's death. Despite this risk, Cleveland would not even let his mustache be trimmed because he so wanted to cover-up the fact that he had undergone surgery. To make matters worse he allowed his administration to slander the journalist from Philadelphia who dared out the president's secret surgery. Cleveland never corrected the errors and it was not until 1916, eight years after Grover died, that Dr. Kean came clean on the affair and vindicated the brave journalist who dared expose the truth.

"Tell the truth,"- Stephen Grover Cleveland
