BDS might actually stand a vague chance of success if they didn't make very clear at every opportunity that their real target was American Jews who are made to feel unsafe in their own country. But they do, therefore they reap the consequences. BDS should be treated the same way as the American Family Association or other hate groups, and this is a very good start.

Cuomo is a mixed bag, but I'm glad he's on the side of the good guys on the big issues, such as this and his constant trolling of the Sandanista Mayor of NYC.

I suspect they probably can preclude any future state contracts with pro-BDS groups, since it's only governing the state's conduct, but that's as far as they can go.

Yes, this is often how totalitarian movements slowly come to power. People underestimate them until it's too late. I'm glad Cuomo is taking the fight to them while they're still weak.

Generally the effect of sanctions, embargoes, boycotts of a country's businesses, et cetera is to embolden a bad government to circle the wagons and whip its populace up into a siege mentality. Since the intent of sanctions is to starve a population to the point where they have to overthrow their government to get food (or insert other necessities instead of eating, depending on the specific sanctions regime), they're also morally wrong.

Especially since BDS calls for an absolute boycott, including one of left-wing Israeli academics.

They don't oppose the occupation, they oppose the existence of Israelis.

Also lol @ people who think BDS, if successful, would "bring Israel to the table". If anything, it would embolden the right and guarantee them electoral victories for years to come.

Well it would be a very long-term project. The US might not support Israel at the UN, hurting Israel on that front. BDS would have to ultimately help change the behavior of the US, otherwise it would be an abject failure that would have done nothing substantially but help the right electorally. Not a certain thing by any means, but a bet that is worth it.

And if that's their goal, then they need to stop terrorizing Jewish students on campus and acting like a hate group. Because currently, they're not doing a very good job of being anything else besides the latest front for acceptable anti-semitism in this country.
