It's the Olympics stupid! Neither party's want there conventions to clash with Olympics; the reason why you have had the nominating conventions in late August and early September over the last two cycles, was because the Beijing Olympics, kick-off August 6, finished August 22 2008 and this year London, July 27 through August 10. Neither party want's there coverage minimized. The Rio Olympics are scheduled to be held from August 5 through August 21; so Republicans could host there convention in mid to late July and the Dems from either August 22 or August 29, take your pick.

The other alternative, if not having the GOP convention before the Olympics, then have it on August 22 and Dems a week later, but Dems finish up on September 1; the fact that up to 1992 at least, you had the challenger's party going in mid July, the incumbent's party in Mid till late August, but then you have hurricane season ratcheting up in late August, early September. Tell the Brazilians to move the Olympics back into July, I'm sure they will accommodate both party's convention scheduling arrangements....not!
