Does anyone really think disadvantaged children benefit from missing school?

Does anyone really think throwing parents in jail benefits disadvantaged children or prevents truancy?
Of course.

Punishing bad parenting benefits disadvantaged children overall, and should reduce truancy.

This would help in situations where kids are late due to parental neglect.

I'm no supporter of Kamala Harris, and admittedly I just skimmed the article but I do think there is some sense in going after the parents of children that chronically miss school.  It doesn't seem to me like that's on par with the things going on at the border.

It's not a big deal at all. Almost every state charges parents for truancy. This is just a zoomed-in attack on Harris that's a big fat nothing-burger.

Just because every state does something doesn't make it right.

Still doesn't justify zooming in on Harris for following it. Honestly, nobody will care about this. It's normal.

The reason people are "zooming in" on Harris for this is because she is running for president. When you run for president, you ought to expect people to scrutinize your record. Democrats have a right to say they don't support this statist BS that apparently "almost every state" does, and adjust their opinions of Harris accordingly.
If you truly think this is disqualifying, and it is common, there should be an effort to eradicate all who have done this from the political scene. It should be made certain that no President will appoint any prosecutor who did what Harris did to a court or to the Justice Department or to any Cabinet/ Sub-Cabinet office.

Unless people are willing to go that far, this is largely trumped up.

I'm sure throwing parents in jail really helps create stable households that kids need to benefit from education.

The kid that had their mother die in jail for truancy surely got a massive benefit from truancy laws.

Here is a graphic from a 2011 study in Washington state on this, showing truancy court actually having a negative effect if anything statistically significant happened:

Two points here.

1. Were the truants referred to the courts selected VIA a somewhat random process? One could figure that kids who are truant more often are more likely to be referred to the courts, so you're dealing with a more troubled selection.

2. The laws don't just affect the kids who are truant. One rationale is discouraging kids who haven't been truant yet and parents who haven't made decisions allowing that, but might head in that direction.

I'm looking a bit more at the source, and it's a bit shady. The author writes about being accused of being a Russian troll, and has some odd takes (accusing Terry Crews of cowardice for not responding to sexaul assault with violence, criticizing Obama/ praising DeSantis on pardons of black men convicted unjustly generation ago, backing a meme to encourage Sanders supporters to leave the Republican party.)

It's hilarious seeing Atlas lefties admit they don't care about poor minority families. Keep showing your true colors, folks Smiley

I assume that means you think this policy helps "poor minority families." Explain how it does. Or let me guess: you actually have given it no thought and have no awareness of how it affects people.
How does encouraging truancy help poor minority families? These are the kids who need every second in school the most.
