Lieberman.

It fit his country first message and would allow him to try to define Obama as an inexperienced partisan. He'd also get attention for the first unity ticket since Lincoln.

I understand why he went for Palin (added diversity/ youth, expertise on energy issues, doubles down on mavericks, pleases the base), but the last few years have shown that she does not have the temperament for national office.
