His career defining performance was as Yosser Hughes, an unemployed Liverpool construction worker driven to insanity by his plight, in Alan Bleasdale's 1980s drama serial Boys from the Blackstuff.
Hill's performance as Yosser was remarkable: by turns tragic, terrifying and blackly comic (and while the script is funny when it needs to be that it actually works in the case of Yosser came down to Hill's excellent comic touch), often within seconds of each other. The character became (and remains) iconic in Britain, and Yosser's plaintive chant of 'gizza job' remains well known.
