The widespread willingness to physically attack authorities and their representatives is new and so is significant. But as always with this sort of thing, it's best to wait and see rather than make projections.

My worry is how large are these protests actually. Is this genuinely some Arab Spring moment, or are we just seeing response bias. I’m not saying this to be annoying, I hope they are widespread but it’s hard to tell.

I think if they weren't genuinely widespread they would have been crushed by now.

The nervousness of the regime about them is very obvious as well, which tells its own story.

Never forget how leftists internationally were Ruhollah Khomenei’s cheerleaders, and that the current Iranian regime is a leftist one.

Back in the 1980s the regime carried out the biggest mass murder of left-wingers this side of the Indonesian Genocide and one of the officials most directly involved in the implementation of that is now the President. The Iranian government is by any reasonable measure one of the most right-wing in the world and that some extremely stupid people on the Hard and Far Left thought and think favourably about it because for them all that matters really is hostility towards America and Israel is a statement on their moral and intellectual bankruptcy and nothing else.

If state control of the economy and nothing else is all that determines whether a particular leader or government is left or right-wing, then noted left-wing luminaries would include Louis XIV, the Emperor Augustus and Rameses II.

No, there have been protests and attacks on government symbols, enforcers etc. in provincial areas as well.
