Interesting Dem cluster there in Hampshire (that the name?) county.

Lotsa students & etc in that blob; contains Amherst and all that. As another thing to note, if you look at Middlesex county, you'll see that Reagan won Lowell.

where have the reagan democrats gone, al?

They're still there (although not always living in the same places as '84), as you yourself noted a while ago (the split between the two sorts of Democratic legislators. It was in the Gubernatiorial board...) it's just that... well... when was the last time a GOP presidential candidate went after Massachusetts?
There were interesting echos of the possibility in '04 actually; Bush increased his vote markedly in the Boston Metro and came shockingly close to beating Kerry with Catholic voters.

Sad but (in much of the city) true...

It's like that in parts already IIRC

No, because I don't know my way around that area that well. I see that Reagan won all the townships in that general area bar one, though.

The one exception was (o/c) Lawrence... and even in that case, Mondale only won by 5%.

What's the island below Cape Cod that's mostly red?

Martha's Vineyard; makes up most of Dukes County

'84 was the last election that Nantucket voted for a GOP Presidential candidate; in '88 it voted 59% for Dukakis and that was the end of that. Before then it had been loyally Republican (with the obvious exception of 1964) since 1920. As late as 1976, Ford won it by over 10pts.
