Unfortunately certain elements of the media have place the desire to be first over the responsibility to be thorough and so have spread false rumours as fact; very embarrassing.

No, there wasn't this nihilistic element, but the intention of some specific incidents was often just to kill civilians. Long ago and far away now, of course.
