But I've never heard there are any problem with the most basic points, ie, the voter register, the actual counting of votes, the prevention of ballot box stuffing...at least not since the Army marched in 35 years ago.

The problem in Northern Ireland is "Vote Early, Vote Often"...

More or less. All four big parties have people in most constituencies who vote early in the morning, change their clothes etc and go back to vote again later. Sometimes several more times.
It's particulary bad in North Belfast o/c...

In rural areas there are (this is true, BTW) people that go around from polling station to polling station in buses...

Mind you, since the big registration purge a few years back, things aren't as bad as they were.
