So much earlier than most places. I believe France the UK and Canada weren't until the 60s.

The Sexual Offences Act 1967 legalised homosexual sex between men over the age of 21, but only in England and Wales. It wasn't legal in Scotland until 1980 and not in Northern Ireland until 1982. The age of consent was not equalised until 2000/2001. Amusingly, female homosexual sex has never been illegal here.
