Its a general problem in modern monarchies. The inheritance customs where developed in a totally different age where Kings died much earllier, often in battle. They should implement a retirement age at 70 or make it mandatory to skip a generation, so the middle generation could have a civilian carreer. But both things are extremely difficult to implement.

It's a good argument for male inheritance, as they can get their kids later, and have less chance of surviving them. (just kidding)

But there are a benefit in royals getting their kids relative late.

It's safe to say that his reign will be a lot shorter than his mother's.

Considering how long Queen Mom lived, his mother may very well outlife him.

Since the previous Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) outlived one of her children (Princess Margaret) it's not impossible, especially given Elizabeth II's continued good health.

It may be quite possible, but I hope for no parent to outlive their children. As for Charles as king, I personal think, when he become king, he will be so in name only, leaving most of his duties to his son, seeing as he already now could retire, while William will have the perfect age and is much more popular than his father.
