The Legal Marijuana Now Party will no longer be recognized as a major political party in Minnesota after the state Supreme Court ruled Friday that they failed to meet legal requirements to maintain that status.

The unanimous ruling from the court directs the Secretary of State's office to "take all appropriate actions necessary" to make sure Legal Marijuana Now is not considered a major party on state ballots in this year's August primary and November general elections. Two justices did not participate in the ruling.

Impact is the LMN party now has to gather signatures to get on the ballot rather than just paying a nominal filing fee. Democrats have complained in the past that Republicans have ran bogus LMN candidates in order to spread out the left leaning vote (see MN-02 ).

FWIW the signature threshold is not that high, a serious 3rd party candidate will have no problem meeting it, but the ruling should discourage gadfly spoilers.

Marijuana is now legal in Minnesota.  What on earth would they run on now?

Good question. I think for a long time it has been more about being a political spoiler than legalizing marijuana. They should at least rebrand the party to stay relevant.
