I know it's tough to recruit candidates to run hopeless races but it seems in parts of the deep south the Democratic Party has ceased to exist. In Alabama with a week to go before the filing deadline only AL-02 & AL-07 have Democratic candidates. Republicans have candidates in all 7 CDs.

https://aldemocrats.org/2024-qualified-candidates

https://algop.org/2024-qualified-candidates/

In Arkansas Dems do not have a candidate in AR-01 or AR-04.

Of course there will probably be filings in at least some of these districts but right now things are looking bleak for Dems in the first two states to close filings. Not that they have a chance to win any of the open districts but it would be nice to run somebody.

Has there ever been a case where all of Alabama's red seats were uncontested by Democrats?

I wouldn't think so.

There is a Dem in AL-01 who filed with the FEC in May but has not raised any money or filed with the state party yet.

Filing has now closed in Alabama. There may be some more paperwork in the pipeline that is not on the website yet but as of filing closing time:

Dems: Candidates in AL-01, AL-02, AL-06, and AL-07. No candidate AL-03, AL-04, AL-05.  13 candidates have filed for the new AL-02.

Reps: All districts have at least 2 candidates running including the matchup of 2 incumbents in AL-01. Largest field is 8 candidates in AL-02.

Arkansas filing has closed. All races are contested by both parties. Next up Illinois in 3 weeks.

Next filing deadlines coming up.

Illinois- Tomorrow, Dec 4.

https://www.elections.il.gov/ElectionOperations/CandidateFilingSearch.aspx?ID=rfZ%2buidMSDY%3d

With one day of filing left 16 of the 17 incumbents have filed for re-election. The only one not to file so far is Jonathan Jackson (D) in dark blue IL-01. I would assume Jackson files tomorrow but as of today there are no democrats running in IL-01.

The most interesting primary is in IL-12 where 2022 GOP Governor nominee Darren Bailey is challenging Mike Bost.

Besides IL-01 no Democrats have filed so far in IL-15, and IL-16. No Republicans have filed IL-03, IL-04, IL-09 and IL-10.

California- Filing closes Friday Dec 8 in most races and Wed Dec 13 for those races where the incumbent is not running for re-election. Watching to see if Kevin McCarthy files by Friday. Filing takes place at the county level in California and I am not ambitious enough to dig through county websites to see who already has filed, at some point the state will release a list.

Texas- Monday Dec 11. A week left so not going to read a lot into it but a lot of seats are currently uncontested by one party or the other.

Illinois filing deadline has passed. All 17 incumbents have filed for re-election. Republicans did not field a candidate IL-04 or IL-09. Democrats did not field a candidate in IL-15 or IL-16. I don't know the Illinois specific rules if those slots can be filled by the parties or by write ins later but for the moment they are are uncontested by one of the major parties. A couple interesting primaries.

IL-07: In 2022 Danny Davis won a closer than expected primary over Kina Collins 52-46. Collins is running again but so are 4 other candidates probably splitting the anti Davis vote.

IL-12: Republican incumbent Mike Bost faces off against 2022 GOP Governor candidate Darren Bailey.

Tomorrow is the last day to file in TX. GOP has yet to file candidates in 5 urban Dem seats, Dems in 9 in the rural west and East Texas. Notably Cuellar is the only dem registered in his district, and looks to be dodging another repeat challenge.

CA deadlines have been extended as per law in the districts with retirements, aka all the ones we knew about. No shock retirements besides McCarthy earlier.

Any other last-minute surprise retirements in Texas?

Biggest question is will Sheila Jackson Lee unretire after losing the Houston Mayors race. My guess would be yes. And as mentioned above I am watching to see if Henry Cuellar avoids a progressive primary challenge. His only Republican challenger so far also appears to be nobody, any other Republicans jump in?

A half hour after filing closed no announced primary challenger to Henry Cuellar. Maybe some paperwork in the pipeline but as of now he looks to have avoided another big primary battle.

Last minute filings continue to trickle in in Texas. The filing deadline was yesterday but there is a short window for the parties to transmit their final lists to the SOS. From what I assume is the nearly final candidate list:

- 35 of 38 House incumbents filed for re-election. No surprise retirements, only the previously announced retirements of Granger (TX-12), Burgess (TX-26), and Allred (TX-32, running for Senate) did not file.

- No Democrats filed in TX-01, TX-11, TX-13, TX-19, and TX-25. No Republicans filed in TX-09, TX-16, TX-20, and TX-30.

- Next closing up is the extended filing period in CA tomorrow. North Carolina closes Friday.

North Carolina- Filing closed at noon today. No surprise retirements just the 5 previously announced ones, Dems NC-06, NC-13, NC-14 and Republicans in NC-08 and NC-10. No Democrats filed in NC-03 or NC-06 which means due to the new maps NC-06 becomes our first guaranteed flip of the cycle.

California- Extended filing ended Wednesday but we still do not have an official candidate list. It appears they process candidate filings as fast as they count absentee ballots in CA.

Next up Ohio next Wednesday.

No third parties here, it seems. Just like the last two Ohio Senate races.

Independent candidates have until March 18th to file so this is not a final final list.

Unofficial list of candidates in California. This should be nearly 100% accurate but the official official list does not come out until Dec 28.

Interesting that there are 27 candidates for the full Senate term (10 Rep, 11 Dem, 6 other) but only 7 candidates running for the partial term (2 Rep, 5 Dem). Good chance we have different matchups in each race.

Filing deadline is today in Kentucky. With a few hours left all the incumbents have filed. So far no Democrats have filed in KY-04 or KY-05.

Next up Utah on Monday.

Pennsylvania: Senate race is going to be Casey/McCormick. Casey is unopposed and McCormick only faces a some dude I can not find anything about. In the House all races are contested by both parties except PA-03 (Philly, Dwight Evans) where no Republicans ran. Evans does face a couple primary opponents including a state rep.

What are the filing deadlines in Arizona?

For the non presidential races, from politics1.com
Filing Deadline (Major Parties): April 8, 2024
https://politics1.com/az.htm

This is the U.S election calendar
https://politics1.com/calendar.htm
That site is even more confusing. It has both July 30th and August 6th as primary dates

Ron Gunzburger, the webmaster/owner of politics1.com isn't perfect. From the Arizona Secretary of State website it's August 6th. I should email him on his error.

July 30th is the correct date. Arizona recently passed a bill that moves everything up one week.

I'm little behind on updating this, sorry.

Nebraska: Filing deadline was March 1. Both Senate seats are up including a special to fill the last two years of the Sasse/Ricketts seat. No Democrat filed for the full term seat held by Deb Fischer, Democrats are expected to get behind Independent Dan Osborn. Osborn does not have to submit petitions to get on the ballot until this fall. As for the House all 3 races are contested with the highlight being a 2022 rematch in NE-02 between Bacon(R) and Vargas (D).

Next up Georgia tomorrow (March 8 ). Things get busy the rest of March with 10 states on deck after Georgia.

Georgia: All incumbents are running except for previously announced retiring Drew Ferguson (R). Lines have changed and a couple members are running in different numbered districts but the only real competitive district will be GA-02 where incumbent Sanford Bishop (D) will be favored. All districts have candidates from both parties.

Next up Montana tomorrow (March 11) and Oregon on Tuesday (March 12).

Montana: Big Senate race likely will be Tester vs Sheehy. Sheehy faces a couple minor challengers in the primary but nothing he should need to worry about.

MT-01 is a rematch of a close 2022 race, Zinke (R) vs Tranel (D). In MT-02 9 Republicans and 4 Democrats are running for this safe Republican seat.

Oregon: All incumbents are running for re-election except Earl Blumenauer (D) OR-03. Lots of candidates from both parties for all the seats.

Next up, Idaho, Iowa, Maine and Nevada on Friday (March 15).

4 states had their filing deadline today.

Nevada: Filing deadline today was for everybody including minor parties and independents. 22 candidates in total filed for Senate with Jackie Rosen facing 3 some dudes for the Democrats, 13 Republicans, a Libertarian, a American Independent party member and 4? Independents.

As for the House, all incumbents filed. There is no Democrat in NV-02 but there are minor party and independent candidates.

Iowa: All incumbents filed. It appears the Libertarians are not running anyone anywhere so that's good news for Republicans.

Idaho: Incumbents are running. Both seats are contested but likely uncompetitive.

Maine: Senate- I don't believe Independents (King) have to file yet. There is a Democrat and a Republican filed. Remember RCV so the Dem should not be a spoiler for King.

House. Incumbents are running in both districts and so are Republican challengers.

Next up Colorado Next Tuesday (March 19.

Colorado signature filing deadline was Tuesday but candidates can also get ballot access by receiving enough support at the party assembly (30% ?) so I'm not going to try and post a final list yet. I will say Lauren Bobert did file enough signatures and will be on the ballot for the regular CO-04 primary.

Next up New Jersey next Monday (March 25).

Next up New Jersey next Monday (March 25).

NJ's candidate petition filing deadline for partisan primaries is next Monday March 25th, but the petition filing deadline for independents in the general is Primary Day itself, Tuesday June 4th. Not that that's been made relevant or anything by something like the incumbent Senator standing trial on charges of bribery & corruption for ~4-6 weeks starting May 6th.

Thanks for pointing that out.

For the record I am only posting major party deadlines here. If you care about minor parties or independents check out Ballotpedia or The Green Papers they are far more thorough than I am.

New Jersey: Filing closed today. The big news of course in the Senate race was who didn't file, Incumbent Robert Menendez and one time Democratic frontrunner NJ First Lady Tammy Murphy. Menendez may still run as an Independent. In all 3 Democrats and 5 Republicans filed for the open seat.

In the House all incumbents except Andy Kim (running for Senate) filed for re-election and all races are contested.

Next up Missouri and South Dakota tomorrow (March 26).
