Have you ever heard of George Bernard Shaw's "The adventures of the black girl in her search for God." I'm not sure, but it might be useful. If you haven't heard of it, it was written in 1932.
It was a strong condemnation of the many views of God not only in the Bible, but other views as well. It's been a while since I read it, but it does point out some flaws of modern religion.
At the time it wasn't well received, and I am sure that there are many today who would find it offensive, unfortunately. I don't know what Shaw's religion was, but the point is that he was attacking the orthodoxy of his time, and still many hold to orthodox views, today, which is tragic, of course.
