If Trump beats Clinton (albeit highly unlikely) how many Clinton supporters will concede that Sanders was a better candidate? Probably not very many.

He's not because Trump would beat him by more. The best candidate in each contest for the general election is being nominated (among those who ran; obviously many are better than Hillary and there might be someone at least as good as Trump).

If by "best candidate" you mean the most disliked, then your statement is correct.
