Yes but that would require Hollywood to think.

Yes. I do not understand how those stupid Marvel movies kept making so much money. But, to be fair, I also willingly saw all Harry Potter and Jurassic World installments in theaters, so I'm part of the problem.

Also, I would not consider a book adaptation to be "unoriginal," there's a great tradition of books providing great source material for movies and musicals. As you alluded to, it would be hard to exclude them. Look at the AFI list of the best American movies ever. Removing the ones based on books (or plays) would leave a huge hole.

-The Godfather
-Gone with the Wind
-Casablanca
-Lawrence of Arabia
-The Wizard of Oz
-The Graduate
-Schindler's List
-It's a Wonderful Life
-The Bridge on the River Kwai
-All About Eve
-The African Queen
-Psycho
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

And that's just from the first 20 movies!

Don't forget Jaws and The Exorcist!!!

and that dazzling literary classic, Valley of the Dolls!

Yes but that would require Hollywood to think.

They do think. They think about profits, LOL.

yea lol.... i just wish they thought about more than profits sometimes, give us some refreshing new material, everything in Hollywood is $$$,  I'd love to see some new family films like we had in the 90s (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Edward Scissorhands, My Girl, etc.)  I think once COVID is history (I pray every day this is) that we'll have a Creative Renaissance!
