That's an incredibly major "put aside" there. Segregation and discrimination against minorities was the biggest blot on the U.S. before LBJ. One can make a very strong argument that LBJ's achievements in the civil rights sphere outweigh Vietnam and his other shortcomings. What you said is a little like saying: "Boy, Hitler really did a bang up job on Germany. His only two mistakes were launching WWII and conducting the Holocaust."
