South Africa is a mess, sadly. It had what appeared to be a promising start for the post-apartheid era, but all the built in advantages that South Africa had over the truly pathetic countries that surround it are being lost.
South Africa is losing its most skilled and productive citizens because the government is not strong enough to tamp down the racial resentment that is driving them out.
AIDS is another incredibly serious problem, and African leaders in general have refused to face up to reality on this, or tell their people the truth. It is incredibly sad - we are watching a whole continent die, and there little that we can really do except try to make it a little less painful.
With respect to AIDS, the real solution, though politically incorrect to western liberals, is to discourage bisexuality and encourage heterosexual monogamy. In African culture, it is socially acceptable for men to cheat on their wives with young boys, who are considered the most delectable sexual treat by men. The contract AIDS, then give it to their wives when they sleep with them. The AIDS problem in Africa will not get better until this behavior is severely discouraged.
