This is arguably the most spiritual mainstream/cult movie of the past few decades.
The whole point of the film wasn't who died, or how often he killed himself but how long it took Phil to become a better person.
That he was morally reckless didn't stop the loop. Killing himself didn't stop the loop. It was all just wasted time. However he had to learn that by being reckless. Even when he reached the point where his life was bliss; he knew everyone in the town, learned new hobbies, enjoyed his days and was arguably the most ethical and moral person in the whole town, the loop continued. Two completely different people from start to finish with two different paths but the end result was the same.
